No Experience Required

Early in the morning the highway unspools west from Cairo and the city’s smudge gives way to a clean, bright desert. The car hums and, hours later, palms and mud-brick houses of Bahariya Oasis appear like a promised change of pace. From there a private 4x4 pushes off-road — dunes flatten into black volcanic swells, then into chalk-white sculptures sculpted by wind and time.
