The trail opens with a view: the Niagara River narrows, water hunched and furious, the Whirlpool spinning below as the rim winds reveal the scale of the gorge. Your guide stands near the visitors' center, and the group leans into the wind that smells of spray and wet stone. You begin by peering over the rim, then descend more than 400 carved stone steps into the belly of the gorge.

The gorge hosted early industrial rail lines and early tourist attractions; the Whirlpool formed as the river cut into layered dolostone and shale over millennia.
Stay on marked trails to limit erosion; the gorge’s exposed rock and fragile shoreline recover slowly when trampled—pack out all trash and respect historical remnants.
