A low, bracing wind carries salt and kelp-scented spray as the 4x4 slips off tarmac and onto the rough track toward Whale Point. The road opens to a wide beach where elephant seals sprawl in the sun and gentoo penguins patrol the surf — animals unapologetically themselves against a backdrop of blue sea and folded hills.
