The bus pulls away from Wellington harbour and the city drops behind you, the sea breathing against the hull of the bay while the hills ahead still hold traces of the Shire. You follow a narrow road into sheltering beech and pine, guides pointing out the “shortcut to mushrooms” and the bend where Frodo’s journey truly began. Actors’ footprints are replaced by your own as you step across slopes used for hobbit-scale shots and pose at the famous “get off the road” turn.
