You lift off just outside Perth and the city grid shrinks beneath a scatter of farms and red dirt. The plane banks low over the Avon Valley, and the country opens into a spare, sunbaked countryside where Wave Rock—an enormous, curved slab of granite—hovers on the horizon like a frozen ocean swell. Minutes later you stand at its lip, the rock’s striations and orange lichen close enough to count, while a breeze off the coast seems to be pulling you toward Rottnest Island and an afternoon with the island’s famously unbothered quokkas.
