ABOUT

Rowing is a no-impact moderate activity suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. Each boat sits a maximum of 5 people with one person using a set of oars to propell the boat across the water.

Whether you’re wanting to go fishing, have a picnic or just want a gentle family adventure on the water, these recreational rowing boats are the perfect way to explore Ullswater.

ROWING BOAT HIRE

Rowing boat hire has various options.

Boats can be hired for up to a maximum of 5 people up to 310kg (including dogs) and they can be hired by the hour, for a half-day or full day.

It's a great way to get out on the water in a leisurely way and take in the beautiful scenery all around Ullswater.

We recommend an adult rower as it can be hard work. Children are OK to have a go too, but always come ashore to swap seats first! (Standing up on these boats is not recommended).

All boat hires require somebody over the age of 18 to be out on the lake with anyone under 18 at all times.

People MUST NOT swim from any of the boats.

For your own safety, you must stay on the lake and not go down the river.

What you need

We supply the following:

  • Boat
  • Oars
  • Bouyancy aids (must be worn at all times)
  • A brief instruction before hire

We recommend you bring the following:

  • Clothing and footwear you don't mind getting wet.
  • We suggest you avoid wearing jeans as when wet they can make you cold!
  • Hot weather - suncream and a bottle of water are essential items and think about bringing a sunhat.
  • Cold weather - layers of warm clothing and a change of clothes is advisable.
  • We suggest bringing a mobile phone in case of emergencies and we have dry bags which can be purchased on site.
  • A waterproof jacket and trousers can also be useful as layers help keep you warm on cooler days.

Adventure Tips

Wear Layers and Avoid Jeans

Clothing can get wet — opt for quick-dry layers instead of denim to stay comfortable on the water.

Always Have an Adult Rowing

At least one person over 18 must be in the boat when anyone under 18 is on board for safety compliance.

Stay On the Lake

For your own safety, rowing is restricted to Ullswater—do not row down the River Greta or swim from boats.

Bring Sun Protection and Water

On sunny days, sunscreen, hats, and hydration are essential to avoid sunburn and dehydration.
