RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR)

The Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) course is a compulsory online course for all candidates applying for a new RYA Commercial Endorsement or renewing an existing one. You can take this course at any time prior to submitting your application or revalidation request. Once completed, your PPR certificate will remain valid for either your first commercial endorsement or your next renewal.

Course Overview

The PPR course is made up of four interactive modules:

1. Commercial Environment – Understand your place in the professional maritime industry and how it operates.
2. People – Covers correct manning levels, keeping qualifications current, and the safe management of commercial vessels.
3. Vessel – Focuses on the compulsory carriage and maintenance of safety equipment and how to develop and implement risk control procedures.
4. Purpose – Ensures your vessel is legal and fit for purpose, highlights your environmental responsibilities, and promotes safe planning and situational awareness.

After completing the modules, you will take a mock assessment to test your understanding and prepare for the final graded assessment.

Learning Outcomes

• Understand your duty of care and legal responsibilities to your crew, passengers, and other water users.
• Be aware of current regulations, safe practices, and professional standards required to operate commercial vessels.

Duration

• Approx. 6 to 8 hours to complete the modules
• Final graded online assessment: 2½ hours (split into two sections)

This course is entirely online and can be taken at your own pace. It is mandatory for all commercial endorsement holders, whether new or renewing.
