About

Students learn to sail on a Beneteau ASA 22, designed specifically for ASA 101 classes. You will sail in moderate winds and sea condition. No prior experience is required to take this class. You will learn how to rig a boat, hoist and trim the sails, tack, jibe, douse the sails and do a person overboard drill.

  • Demonstrated ability to sail a sloop-rigged keelboat of approximately 20 to 27 feet in length by day in light to moderate winds and sea conditions.
  • Knowledge of basic sailing terminology, parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety including basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards.
  • Auxiliary power operation is not included.
  • The class prices include all materials, certifications, fees, and taxes.

  • Take the ASA Online Sailing Course for an introduction to sailing - you’ll understand how a sailboat works, the common commands used to steer one, and some basic sailing terminology

What to Bring

  • Bottled water
  • Sunglasses, preferably polarized
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat or Cap
  • Non-marking shoes, such as tennis shoes or deck shoes without black bottoms that might leave scuff marks on the boats
  • Bring layers to wear; it is cooler out on the water. Bring rain gear in case it rains
  • ASA textbook and logbook
  • Writing pad, pen

What to Expect

  • The first day this course will take place in the classroom promptly at 9am until lunch, then out on the water. The second day the course will meet on one of our boats promptly at 9am.
  • We are mailing your ASA 101 Course Text and Study Guide out to you. Please review the course text and study guide in advance of your course and make sure to bring all materials to the class with you
