Join the Kayak Basics class at Jack London Square to master essential paddling skills like forward and reverse strokes. Explore various kayak types in a safe, calm environment, perfect for beginners. This engaging experience sets the foundation for your kayaking journey, ensuring you’re ready for future adventures on the water.

L1: Kayak Basics (Jack London Square)

Do you want to learn to paddle but are not sure where to start? The goal of this class will introduce a few basic strokes (forward, reverse and sweeps) that are fundamental to all types of kayaking. You will learn about different types of kayaks, including Touring Kayaks, Recreational Kayaks, and Sit-on-Tops. This class focuses on flat water skills and safety for those who want to paddle recreational kayaks!

Further instruction should be pursued later for those who want to paddle touring or sea kayaks in our Beginning Sea Kayaking I class. This class is equivalent to an American Canoe & Association Level 1 course.

L1: Kayak Basics Conditions:

Flat water, protected from wind, waves and outside boat traffic, with current less than 0.5 knots, and within swimming distance of shore.

  • Less than 15 mph wind
  • Waves (chop) less than 2 feet (0.6 meters)
  • Surf Less than 2 feet (0.6 meters)
  • Current less than 2 knots
  • A combination of these conditions may exist, this is not always the case in the Bay.

Cost:

  • from $99
  • Class fee includes kayak, paddle, pfd (life vest), paddling jacket, wetsuit.
  • Minimum Enrollment: 3; Private class can be arrange if min. enrollment not met (additional fee applied).
  • Own Boat & Gear discount available if suitable class condition. If you are uncertain of the suitability of your boar/gear for this class please contact classes@calkayak.com

Note: This class does not qualify participants to rent touring (closed-deck) or sea kayaks; our: Beginning Sea Kayak class deals with those specific qualifications.

Typical Class Duration: 3-4 hours. Location: Meet at 409 Water St, Oakland, Jack, London Square

Prerequisite:

  • No previous kayaking experience is required; however, a good physical condition is required to assure an enjoyable class.
  • The minimum age for the class is 14 years; minor must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
