Read the full experience

The annual transformation of New England’s forests into glowing bands of crimson, amber, and gold draws visitors from far and wide, and there’s no better way to savor this vibrant spectacle than aboard the Fall Cider & Donut Cruise departing from Essex, Massachusetts. This unique two-hour voyage circles Hog and Choate Islands, giving adventurers an intimate look at the region’s iconic spruce forests framed in vivid autumn colors. The cruise weaves quietly through coastal waters, offering calm, unobstructed views of the foliage along the shoreline and the islands’ rugged natural contours. Operated from 35 Dodge Street in Essex, this seasonal outing has carved out a special place in the local outdoor recreation calendar. Unlike land-based leaf-peeping tours, the waterborne perspective showcases not only the arresting color display but also the salt marshes and estuaries that are home to a variety of migratory birds. Passengers can soak in the brisk, fresh sea air while enjoying complimentary hot cider and fresh donuts from nearby Russell Orchard, a beloved local farm known for its heritage apples and artisanal baked goods. The cruise fosters a cozy, communal atmosphere that’s both family-friendly and ideal for solo travelers or couples seeking a relaxing escape. The surrounding spruce stand is distinctive here due to its resilience in brackish coastal conditions, offering a striking contrast to inland hardwood forests typical of New England fall foliage. As the boat gently glides past quiet shorelines, guests might catch glimpses of herons or osprey, making it a miniature wildlife viewing adventure. For those visiting Essex and looking to combine seasonal color with leisurely nature time, the Fall Cider & Donut Cruise offers a refreshing perspective along the storied Massachusetts coast. This experience transforms a classic autumn tradition into a memorable maritime outing that celebrates local flavor, landscape, and light.
