About This Adventure

Experience the thrill of seining the East River at Brooklyn Bridge Park! Students will engage in hands-on learning by using a traditional Lenape fishing technique to catch and release local fish and crabs. This unique outdoor adventure combines science and nature, offering a memorable exploration of the river's ecosystem.

Brooklyn Bridge Park's Education Program serves over 10,000 students a year. We use the Park as a living laboratory for hands-on investigation, incorporating inquiry-based learning into lessons that meet Common Core, NYC and NYS learning standards.

GO FISH! SEINING THE EAST RIVER (9-12)

Observe how instructors use a 20-foot net to humanely catch and release organisms from the East River using an ancient fishing technique employed by the Lenape on this very river. Learn how to identify local fish and crab species and use this knowledge to record data like a scientist. With prior permission and signed waivers, students over the age of 14 can seine, too.

Duration: 90 minutes.

Location: Pier 4 Beach, fully outdoors. There will be a mix of uneven ground of rocks and beach as they explore.
