The paddle from Wallingford to Base is a very long day’s hire but if you are up for a challenge this is a great trip. It is about 4 miles further upstream than South Stoke but there are no more locks as you will be paddling along one of the longest stretches of the river so the downstream paddle is approximately 14 miles with the same 4 locks as the trip from South Stoke before arriving back at Thames Canoe Hire by 5pm. Once you set off you will be paddling through countryside with lots of wildlife to spot. This trip is a great one for a picnic with plenty of places to stop along the way. Pangbourne is a good choice for a stop or you can take your picnic to Purley beach and have a swim as well before heading to our base in Reading where our staff will be there to welcome you at the end of your day’s paddling.
You will be met by our staff with your boat(s) and equipment at the agreed set-off point where they will give you a full safety brief prior to kitting you out and helping you on to your boat to start your trip to our base at The Boat Yard.
This 14-mile paddle typically takes around 8 hours, so start early to enjoy stops without rushing.
Though there are picnic spots along the river, packing your own food and water ensures you stay fueled.
You’ll navigate four locks on the downstream section; be ready to portage canoes carefully as instructed.
A great chance to cool off mid-journey—bring swimwear and towel if you plan to take a dip.
