Lucca’s walls evolved from Roman fortifications to Renaissance bastions; by the 19th century the ramparts were turned into a public promenade preserving the city’s defensive footprint.
The walls are protected as historic fabric; visitors are asked to stay on designated paths, avoid climbing fragile masonry, and use waste bins to reduce wear and litter.
