The sun breaks over Oman’s eastern limestone cliffs as a coastal 4WD threads the narrow road south of Muscat. Salt air and the occasional fishing village slide past the windows, and by mid-morning you’re at the river mouth that marks the start of Wadi Shab — a canyon that alternates between ochre rock, palm-fringed pools, and bright blue swimming holes.
