You step off the shuttle in Aqaba before the road opens up and the desert takes charge — wind pushing sand across a wide, ochre plain as rock towers rise like chapter headings. The morning transfer to Wadi Rum is about an hour; the real day begins when a Bedouin driver climbs into a 4x4 and the jeep devours track and dunescape alike.
