No Experience Required

The sun loosens its grip on the desert and the sandstone walls of Wadi Rum begin to glow from within. You climb out of the jeep onto wind-swept gravel and feel the valley breathe around you: a low, dry sigh that pushes warm air past the hood of your jacket. Your Bedouin guide gestures toward a narrow canyon and the party moves as if pulled by a current; later, the guide will lead you up a dune for sandboarding and, finally, into a cave where a low fire will curl smoke like a promise through the night.

Adventure Tips

Dress in layers for evening cold

Desert temperatures drop quickly after sunset—bring an insulated layer and a windproof shell to stay comfortable at the cave camp.

essential

Bring a good headlamp

Cave camps have minimal lighting; a headlamp frees your hands for setting up gear and navigating paths at night.

essential

Protect against sun and sand

Wear a wide-brim hat, UV sunscreen and sunglasses; consider a lightweight scarf to keep sand out of your face during dune rides.

info

Hydrate before and during the tour

Carry water and sip steadily—driving and activity in dry air accelerate dehydration even if you don’t feel hot.

warning

Recommended Gear

Sleeping bag (rated to 0°C/32°F)

Keeps you warm during cold desert nights in the cave camp.

fall

Essential

Sturdy closed-toe shoes

Protects feet on rocky trails and when climbing dunes for sandboarding.

Hands-free light for camp chores, cave interiors, and nighttime walks.
