Northern Virginia’s vineyards sit on centuries-old agricultural land; the modern wine industry here expanded in the late 20th century as growers identified suitable soils and microclimates.
Many local wineries practice sustainable viticulture and use cover crops to protect soil; visitors can support conservation by staying on paths and disposing of waste properly.
