The engine snarls and the 4x4 slashes into a ridge of red sand as late light gilds the Lahbab dunes—sand rising in a brief, glittering plume that the desert seems to shake off like a coat. You arrive as the sun leans west, the dunes throwing long, amber shadows; the air tastes of dust and warm metal, and the horizon appears to tilt, daring you to chase it.
