High above the Andean plains, the path to Vinicunca unfurls under a thin, cold sky. Travelers step out of the van near a windswept puna and begin a climb that moves from scrubby grass to skeletal rocks, each switchback pushing altitude and anticipation. By the time the striped ridgeline appears, red and ochre bands running against snow-dusted peaks, the air tastes of metal and earth.
