The tour begins at a local cupcake shop near Washington Square Park, then threads east and west through tree-lined blocks, pausing at small bakeries where ovens are still warm and bakers exchange knowing smiles.

The Village's baking culture grew from 19th- and 20th-century immigrant communities; modern cupcake shops are a recent layer atop long-standing neighborhood bakeries.
