You step off an air‑conditioned minivan into a wind that still seems to carry the low, distant rumble of artillery—only now those sounds are echoes in stone and field. The high concrete bulk of Fort Douaumont looms, graffiti‑free and scarred, while rows of white headstones slope away at the Meuse‑Argonne cemetery like a quiet tide.

Verdun and the Meuse‑Argonne were focal points of WWI—Verdun in 1916 marked a grinding Franco‑German engagement, while the 1918 Meuse‑Argonne Offensive was the largest American operation of the war.
Many sites are protected as national memorials; visitors are asked to stay on paths, avoid removing artifacts and support local museums that preserve battlefield landscapes.
