You step onto a narrow wooden platform behind Piazza San Marco and the city shifts—stone facades lean inward, laundry strings cross like stage rigging, and the canal takes over as main street. The gondola rocks once, then the oars pull you forward; water carries you through a series of intimate waterways before the Grand Canal opens like a slow, sweeping boulevard.
easy.
30 minutes.
Suitable for most people; requires stepping onto a low dock and sitting steadily during the ride.
Boarding is at the Bacino Orseolo gondola station behind Piazza San Marco; staff will direct you to the correct queue.
No—this is a shared 30-minute gondola ride; private gondolas are available separately through other providers.
The operator may cancel or reschedule rides in case of exceptional high tide or severe weather and will offer alternatives or refunds.
Large or bulky baggage (over ~16 liters) is not permitted on the gondola; small strollers may be difficult due to steps—check with the operator in advance.
Venice grew from a lagoon economy; many palaces you pass were merchants’ homes and civic offices, including Ca' Farsetti and Palazzo Grimani.
Acqua alta and overtourism strain Venice’s fragile lagoon ecology and historic fabric—respect restrictions, avoid feeding wildlife, and minimize single-use plastics.
