The engine eases and the boat slips into a channel of glassy water; Calibogue Sound breathes out and the mile-long sandbar lifts from the tide as if someone has pulled a curtain. On a falling tide the Vanishing Mile appears: low, pale sand stretching into sun and surf, edged by ruffled marsh grass and the quicksilver flash of dolphins.
