Dawn on the Altiplano bites cold and sharp as the van climbs toward La Cumbre. You step onto a full-suspension bike at 4,700 m, the wind already nudging wheels toward the canyon; the road falls away and the valley dares you to ride faster. Days later the landscape opens again — an impossible white plain at Uyuni where the horizon disappears and your camera becomes a toy for perspective tricks.

Moderate fitness and good cardiovascular baseline; previous biking experience helps for the downhill section and ability to tolerate long bus transits and high altitude.
Some comfort on a bike and basic braking/control skills are recommended; guides manage speed and the group, but the descent includes narrow sections and loose gravel.
The dry season (May–October) gives stable access and classic salt-crust photos; December–March brings the mirror effect but can make parts of the Salar impassable.
Altitude varies between ~3,600 m in Uyuni to 5,000+ m at geyser fields; mild symptoms are common—rest, hydrate, avoid alcohol and consider acetazolamide after consulting a doctor.
Mix of basic shared hotels and simple lodges with included meals as listed; bus transfers include heating and onboard toilets but overnight comfort is budget to mid-range.
