A cold wind greets you stepping off the plane in Ushuaia, the city’s harbor pinpricked with bobbing boats and the Beagle Channel stretching pale and restless to the south. On arrival the city guides you briefly through streets of hardy timber houses before a catamaran waits at the quay; the channel’s currents nudge the hull as islands with sea-bird colonies pass close enough to count feathers.
