Het is nauwelijks nog voor te stellen dat onze hoofdstad in de middeleeuwen slechts een kleine nederzetting was. Amsterdam kreeg rond 1300 stadsrechten en groeide pas in de 15e eeuw uit tot de belangrijkste handelsstad van Holland. Haar naam ontleent de stad aan de dam die werd aangelegd kort na een aantal overstromingen. Rondom deze dam concentreerde zich de handel en werd de Waag gebouwd. De rijken bouwden hun huizen in de hoger gelegen Warmoesstraat. Tijdens deze wandeling door het historisch hart van de stad ontdekt u de oudste geschiedenis van de stad. De route voert langs monumenten als de Oude Kerk, Schreierstoren en een van de laatste twee originele houten huizen in Amsterdam.
