Located on the far South Side, Beverly (also known as Beverly Hills, a name that predates the more famous California town) somehow manages to be both a classic Chicago neighborhood while feeling like nothing else in the city. Growing out of former sheep grazing fields, the "Village in the City" first gained prominence as a railroad and streetcar suburb of wandering streets and Victorian mansions. As the neighborhood grew, residents filled the blocks with an eclectic mix of homes and architectural styles that tell the history of American design. In the 60s and 70s, Beverly residents bucked larger trends by fighting for two causes: FOR historic preservation and AGAINST segregation and blockbusting. Join me for a tour of one of Chicago's most unique (and hilly!) neighborhoods.
The tour will run, rain or shine (barring extreme weather). I recommend bringing a water bottle, sunscreen, and maybe a trusty hat!
