The bus pulls away from the outpost and the river takes over: cold water hurries past rock shelves, eddies nudge the hull, and the guide's voice cuts through the spray. On the Upper Pigeon River, paddlers trade the steady breath of the forest for the quick pulse of rapids that have carved a clear path through the Smokies.

Moderate — should be able to climb in/out of a raft, paddle for short bursts, and follow instructions.
Wear a swimsuit or quick-dry clothing, closed-toe water shoes, and bring a light outer layer; helmets and PFDs are provided.
Children are often allowed but must meet operator age/weight limits and be comfortable following guide instructions; check with the outfitter for minimum age policies.
The river run is approximately 90 minutes; total time at the outpost including orientation and gearing up may add another 30–45 minutes.
