A low, golden sun lifts off the rim of the reservoir as the safari jeep crunches onto the dusty track — Udawalawe’s plains open like a stage. Travelers arriving from Colombo spend the drive shedding city noise; the landscape shifts from paddy fields to open scrub and the reservoir’s broad sheet of water where elephants come to drink.

The safari is family-friendly but not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or certain health conditions; expect bumpy rides and some getting in and out of the jeep.
The park was created in the 1970s after construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir displaced wildlife; it was set aside to protect the area’s large mammals and water-dependent species.
Udawalawe plays a key role in elephant conservation and rehabilitation; visitors should avoid feeding animals, stay on designated tracks, and follow guide instructions to minimize disturbance.
