You step out of the jeep as dusk softens over the reservoir, a humid wind pushing through tall grasses and the low murmur of frogs daring you to stay awake. Headlamps click on around the camp; tiffin tins and the scent of barbecue pull attention back to the ring of people and a guarded, wide-eyed elephant silhouette at the water’s edge.

Minimal fitness required—suitable for most travelers; expect long periods sitting in a jeep and short, flat walks at camp.
Camps are positioned and managed with local guides and trackers; tents are basic but established with safety protocols — always follow your guide’s instructions.
Typical inclusions are hotel pickup, two safaris, private jeep and wildlife tracker, dinner and breakfast at camp, and entrance tickets including the Elephant Transit Home visit.
Families commonly join; activities are low-impact, but check age restrictions with the operator and supervise children near animals and fires.
Early morning and late afternoon safaris concentrate animals at water sources—dry months tend to produce the most reliable sightings.
Udawalawe was established in the 1970s after the construction of the reservoir; it functions as a key corridor for elephants displaced by agricultural development.
The park works with the Elephant Transit Home to rehabilitate orphaned calves; responsible tour behavior reduces stress to animals and supports local conservation funding.
