Tykes & Trout at North Park Lake: Family-Friendly Trout Stocking and Free Fishing in Allison Park, PA

Situated in Allison Park, Pennsylvania, North Park Lake offers a welcoming setting for families and anglers of all skill levels to engage with nature and the local fishing community. The "Tykes & Trout" event, hosted by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission in collaboration with Outdoor Educators, is a standout experience especially designed to introduce children and novices to the art of trout fishing. Taking place at the North Park Lake Boathouse located at 10301 Pearce Mill Road, this free, accessible event offers a rare chance to participate in trout stocking, an activity that connects participants directly with local fishery management practices.

North Park Lake itself is a serene freshwater basin framed by lush greenery common to western Pennsylvania, providing an ideal backdrop for anglers eager to cast lines amidst quiet waters. The lake’s clean environment supports robust trout populations, managed carefully through seasonal stocking efforts by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission. The surrounding parkland is wheelchair and stroller accessible, ensuring inclusivity for all community members.

What sets "Tykes & Trout" apart is its hands-on approach: attendees actively assist Commission personnel with releasing trout into the lake, fostering a sense of stewardship toward local aquatic life. Following the stocking, participants receive full fishing gear including rods, reels, bait, tackle, and safety equipment—no prior fishing license is necessary due to the program’s licensing exemption. Expert Outdoor Educators provide personalized instruction on everything from casting and baiting hooks to fish identification, making it perfect for first-timers or seasoned anglers seeking to refine their skills.

The event aligns with the Pittsburgh First Catch Program, designed to expand public access to fishing and kayaking in the Pittsburgh area through free, supportive events like this one. Supported by the R3 Education Grant Program and funded by the R.K. Mellon Foundation, the initiative promotes outdoor recreation accessibility and environmental education.

Visitors staying in Allison Park or nearby Pittsburgh can easily incorporate this event into a day of exploring Pennsylvania’s park systems. The combination of education, community engagement, and connection to local conservation efforts makes "Tykes & Trout" an enriching outdoor experience for every generation.

Whether you’re introducing a child to their first fishing adventure or looking for a thoughtful way to connect with your surroundings, North Park Lake’s trout stocking event delivers hands-on fun and environmental insight in equal measure.
