The level of sailing will be decided by you, your desires, and your comfort level.
Captain “Ger” is fully licensed and certified by the US Coast Guard as a Master Captain and has 50 plus years of nautical sailing and boating experience in both Canada and the United States. He is very capable and knowledgeable as a Captain, and is known for being a jovial, gracious, and friendly host. He has often been likened to Jimmy Buffett.
The sailing vessel Impulse is an impeccably maintained, modern, well equipped 2006 Catalina C-310 measuring 32’6” in length with a11’6”beam. She is Coast Guard Certified to carry up to 6 paying passengers plus crew and is extremely safe and stable with a 4000 lb, 6’5” deep keel and a total vessel weight of 14,000 lbs. She offers all the creature comforts from cockpit cushions and stern rail seating to protective dodger and sun awnings. The luxurious cabin below is fully plumbed from the private head (bathroom) to electric refrigeration in the galley. She is a joyous, beautiful, and seaworthy vessel.
Do I need to book in advance? We welcome last minute reservations, however, to not disappoint; we recommend that you book in advance to reserve your date. Booking online is easy; please call if you have any questions.
What should I wear? We like to go barefoot aboard, however if you’d be more comfortable wearing shoes please make sure that they have rubber soles and fit securely. Keep in mind that the air temperature over the water is often 10 degrees cooler than on land. Depending on the weather, dress appropriately. I recommend wearing layers; shorts are fine just bring along a sweatshirt and possibly a jacket. Don’t forget your swimsuits and towels. There is ample room below to stow your gear. We do have blankets for you, if you need.
Are pets allowed on board? For the safety and comfort of all our guests and crew, our four legged loved ones are not permitted aboard the vessel. Please make arrangements in advance for their protection and well being. A list can be found on our website for local boarding facilities.
Do you provide food and refreshments? We provide bottled water, and we invite you to bring food and drinks. Small tote coolers work well. We will also provide unbreakable cups and dishes. Keep it simple, finger food and snacks, beer, wine, sparkling water, box juice.
What about the weather? We are constantly monitoring the weather. We wait to make weather decisions until about two hours before your scheduled excursion. If the weather, as determined by the Captains discretion and experience, poses threatening conditions of fog, lightning, or excessively high winds, we may have to reschedule your excursion. If we are unable to reschedule your excursion, we will refund your money. If we are underway and the Captain returns to port due to threatening weather conditions, you will be refunded for the time not used or we can offer you a discount on a future excursion.
What is your cancellation policy? If your plans change we will offer you a full refund if you cancel 72 hours in advance of your scheduled excursion. Or we can reschedule to meet your needs based on our availability.
Should I tip the Captain? Tipping is customary, and should be based on your satisfaction with the service you receive. A 20% gratuity is average if you are happy with the excursion.
How many people can be in our party? The sailing vessel Impulse, in accordance with US Coast Guard regulations has a maximum capacity of 6 paying passengers plus crew. If you have a larger party, we have affiliates that we are often able to partner with and can sail side by side. We will take care of all of the arrangements for you.
Is your sailboat safe? The sailing vessel Impulse is certified; she meets or exceeds all US Coast Guard regulations for construction, stability, safety equipment and electronics for vessels in passenger service. Your Captain is fully licensed and is certified as a Master by the US Coast Guard, he has accumulated many years of experience and service. You can rest assured, you are in good hands.
What is your Covid safety protocol? We take great care to protect the health and well-being of our passengers and crew. Our crew remains vigilant and is regularly screened. All Surfaces are thoroughly sanitized between excursions. If you or anyone in your party are exhibiting any symptoms or have been exposed, please immediately contact us to reschedule or cancel without penalty.
Where is the boat? 13501 S W Bay Shore Dr. (MEET THE BOAT HERE) Traverse City, Michigan 49684 You catch the boat along the seawall at the north end of Elmwood Marina just to the left of the launch ramps. We invite you to pull up with your vehicle 15 minutes ahead of your scheduled excursion to drop off passengers and gear.
We will provide you with FREE parking. Most often at the drop off location at the Elmwood marina parking lot. At busier times you may need to drive over to the overflow lot behind Subway across the road on the W side. - see map below - walk back over via the pedestrian crossing to catch the boat.

You’re welcome to bring refreshments onboard to enjoy during your sail, but glass bottles are not allowed for safety.
Lake temperatures and winds can change quickly, so layering ensures you stay comfortable throughout your trip.
Even on cloudy days, UV exposure on the water is strong. Use sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself.
Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure to ensure a smooth boarding process.
