Morning light pulls up over Padangbai as divers board a wooden jukung and the sea opens ahead — blue, busy and unforgiving. The ride to Gili Tepekong and Mimpang is short but purposeful: by the time the anchors drop, the water is already pulling at your fins and the pinnacles and tunnels rise like reef-formed cathedrals.

No — strong, unpredictable currents and deeper profiles make these sites unsuitable for newly certified divers; experience with drift diving is essential.
Expect whitetip reef sharks, turtles, schooling snappers and occasional pygmy seahorses on the pinnacles. Mola mola sightings increase in cooler months when upwelling is strongest (commonly mid-year), but sightings are never guaranteed.
