The bus peels out of Cairo at dawn and the city contracts behind you into miles of ochre road and empty horizon. By midafternoon the landscape shifts—ribbed black hills rise out of sand, a glinting crystal outcrop appears like spilled glass, and finally the White Desert's chalk mushrooms stand like an otherworldly gallery under a wide sky. You sleep in a tent beneath an array of stars so bright the Milky Way looks like a road cutting through the night.

The tour is moderate: most time is in vehicles with short walks around formations; be prepared for sandy terrain and getting in/out of 4x4s.
Overnight is in desert tents with sleeping bags supplied; camping is basic but sheltered and typically near a campfire and communal meal area.
Children in good health may join but the operator advises against participation for pregnant travelers and those with serious back or heart conditions.
