Dawn pulls the cloud bank off Kilimanjaro’s eastern flank and the rainforest exhales: damp leaf litter, the chitter of monkeys and the steady crunch of boots on a well-worn colonial path. You climb out of the sub-humid plain, past banana terraces and into trees that seem to lean toward the mountain, the trail guiding you from Marangu Gate (1,860 m) up to Mandara Hut (2,700 m).
