Try the Wheel: Beginner Pottery Wheel Throwing Class in Weston, ACT

At 5 Souter Place, Weston, ACT, Try the Wheel delivers a concentrated, friendly introduction to pottery that suits anyone who has ever wanted to shape clay on a spinning wheel. This two-hour beginner class is set in a working studio in Weston, part of the Canberra region, and is built around hands-on practice, patient instruction, and the quiet satisfaction of making something with your hands. The class runs with a maximum of ten participants, which keeps the pace personal: experienced teachers demonstrate techniques, then move around the studio to help you centre clay, pull walls and form simple bowls or cups. Unlimited balls of clay are included so you can experiment freely — expect muddy hands, laughter, and gradual improvements as you repeat the basics. You'll use the studio’s wheels, potsmithing tools, aprons, and glazing equipment; tea and coffee are provided for a relaxed rhythm between attempts. At the end of the session you’ll pick a favourite piece that the studio will clear-glaze and kiln-fire. Finished pottery is available to collect from the studio approximately four weeks after class, so the instant reward of learning is paired with a later, tangible keepsake. The studio’s small class size and emphasis on repetition make this a great first step whether you want a single creative afternoon or the start of a longer ceramics practice — the organisers point new students toward a five‑week beginner course if you catch the bug. Accessibility and safety are clear priorities: the studio is wheelchair accessible though the bathroom is not; students with medical or mobility concerns are encouraged to contact the studio before booking. The class welcomes adults and teenagers aged 12 and over when accompanied by a booked guardian. Pottery requires sitting in one place and some repetitive arm movements, so participants should be prepared for that kind of physical demand. Practical details are straightforward: arrive no more than five minutes early to check in so the group can begin together; bring clothes you don’t mind getting grubby; if classes are below minimum numbers the studio may offer an alternative date. The teachers emphasize process over perfection — the real value is in learning a technique, making mistakes, and walking away with a fired piece that marks your first encounter with the wheel. For visitors to Canberra looking for an active, indoor creative experience, Try the Wheel at Weston offers welcoming instruction, hands‑on practice, and a small piece of pottery that proves you gave it a go. Bookings are available through the studio’s online system and sessions sometimes fill on weekends; check availability in advance and consider a weekday slot for quieter benches and more one-on-one coaching from instructors. Bring curiosity and willingness to learn.
