You step from the jeep into cold, thin air and the valley stretches open: a ribbon of river, a sprawl of spruce, and the jagged teeth of the Terskey Ala-Too pushing skyward. The trail climbs through meadows grazed by horses, threads over scree and boulder fields, and finally unveils Ala Kul’s turquoise bowl at 3,500 m—an alpine lake fed by glacier melt that seems to hold the mountains in suspension.

Good aerobic fitness and experience with multi-day backpacking at altitude; able to hike 10+ km with elevation gain.
Expect steep sections with up to +850 m in a day; it’s strenuous but non-technical—good fitness and steady pacing make it achievable.
Moderate backpacking experience is recommended: multi-day hiking, sleeping in tents, and carrying a daypack are required.
You may experience mild symptoms above 2,500–3,000 m; acclimatize in Karakol, ascend slowly, hydrate, and inform guides of severe symptoms.
Altyn Arashan hot springs are visited on day three; time for bathing is included but entrance fees or modest local charges may apply.
Terskey Ala-Too is part of the greater Tian Shan range, long traversed by Kyrgyz shepherds; local valleys retain nomadic yurt culture and pastoral routes.
Alpine meadows and moraine-fed streams are fragile—stick to established campsites, pack out waste, and avoid disturbing grazing herds.
