Standing on a ridge as dawn rims the eastern wall of the Andes, the valley below breathes mist and bird song. Trails switchback into cloud forest where centuries-old trees tower and fog coils through bromeliads; the mountains here — part of the Serranía de los Yariguíes — push up toward 4,500 meters, carving steep, biodiverse slopes that shelter spectacled bears, elusive jaguars and an astonishing variety of birds.
