Leatherwood Mountains Camping in Ferguson, North Carolina, offers a distinctive setup for equestrian adventurers with its Trail Barn Outside Stalls. This open-air, covered pole barn features 10 spacious stalls designed specifically for horse care amidst the quiet backdrop of a gently flowing creek. Located a short distance from the main campground, the Trail Barn provides a unique blend of rustic functionality and natural tranquility, making it an ideal base for riders who bring their horses into the mountains.

Each 12' x 12' stall comes equipped with rubber mats and partial slats that allow fresh mountain air while protecting animals from the elements. The barn’s tack room supports riders needing secure and convenient equipment storage. Unlike many equestrian facilities, here guests find themselves surrounded by peaceful forested slopes, with access to four grassy areas perfect for group gatherings or additional camping privacy.

Beyond the stalls, Leatherwood Mountains Camping emphasizes responsible horsemanship—visitors must bring their own feed, hay, buckets, and care for their horses daily. While there are no bathrooms or showers on-site at the Trail Barn itself, facilities are accessible within a short walk to the West Barn. The emphasis on privacy and connection with nature suits small groups or families seeking an off-the-grid mountain experience with their horses.

Set in a region known for its mixed hardwood forests and rolling mountain terrain, the Leatherwood Mountains area offers a calm haven for riders and their horses. The creek nearby is a soothing natural element, while the surrounding landscape supports sightings of local wildlife such as white-tailed deer and songbirds. This facility stands out for combining practical horse care amenities with rugged mountain charm, serving as an inviting but hands-on destination for equestrians exploring North Carolina’s backcountry trails.
