History

Kyoto was Japan’s imperial capital for over a millennium; many cycling routes follow old pilgrimage and trade roads that link shrines, tea towns and post towns.

Conservation

Cycling is low-impact travel here—stick to marked paths, use locks to prevent abandoned bikes, and carry out any trash to protect temple precincts and rural waterways.

Adventure tips

Left-side riding and local rulesJapan requires riding on the left; obey signals, use lights after dark and keep to designated cycle paths where posted.

Carry cash and small changeMany rural teahouses and roadside stalls prefer cash—bring yen for drinks, snacks and small temple fees.

Lock and log your bikeUse the provided lock every time you leave the bike; park only in permitted areas to avoid fines or removal.

Start early to avoid heat and crowdsBegin rides before 8AM for cooler temperatures, smoother roads and quieter shrine visits.

Recommended gear

Hydration bottle: Staying hydrated is critical—mount fits bottle cage included with rental.
Pannier or handlebar bag: Carries layers, camera and snacks for a full-day ride without back strain.
Cycling gloves: Improve grip and comfort on longer ride segments and when handling gears.
Lightweight rain shell: Protects against sudden showers and cool winds common in Kansai spring and early fall.
