The air shifts as the bus leaves Cartagena’s stone streets and moves inland: salt and diesel give way to hotter, dust-scented wind and scrubby palms. At El Volcán de Lodo El Totumo you climb a short, rustic stairway and peer into a shallow crater of thick, warm mud that seems to hold the heat of the day. Attendants guide you in and massage mineral-rich mud over shoulders and limbs; the texture is smooth and buoyant, like skin held by the earth.
