Topdeck Countryside North E-Bike: 37 km Waterland Polder Ride from Amsterdam

On the Topdeck Countryside North E‑Bike Tour, Long route you leave Amsterdam’s edge and trade cobbled streets for the open polder: a low-lying, drained landscape of canals, dikes and green pastures north of the city. The ride starts at Mike's Tours, Oosterdoksstraat 106, 1011DK Amsterdam, where guides fit you to a sturdy electric bike and run a quick safety check before ferrying the group across the IJ. Over four hours you cover thirty-seven kilometers of classic Dutch lowlands. The route threads past a working windmill, crosses narrow dikes and rides alongside canals chiselled into clay soils that sit below sea level — a human-made geography that defines the region. You’ll pedal through Broek in Waterland, one of the area’s preserved medieval villages, and into Monnickendam, whose harborfront and narrow lanes feel unchanged since the 17th century. Small bridges and open fields create constant photo opportunities; the horizon is low and wide, dotted by grazing dairy herds and the occasional heron. What makes this tour special is how it combines movement with local craft. Midway you visit a traditional cheese and clog farm where artisans shape wooden shoes and turn curds into Gouda. There’s time to taste cheese samples, ask questions about aging and production, and pick up a small souvenir in the farm shop. Guides layer in regional history — from land reclamation that pushed back the sea to the canals that once powered commerce — giving context to the patchwork landscape. Logistics are straightforward: the price includes a quality e‑bike with pedal assist, rain clothes if needed, and a snack; riders should bring weather-appropriate layers, water and a camera. The tour requires confident cyclists able to maintain 18–20 km/h for extended stretches; the e‑bike makes climbs and headwinds more manageable, but this is not a casual Sunday ride. This is a go-to option for travelers who want an active half-day out of Amsterdam and a tactile introduction to Holland’s rural systems: engineered waterworks, centuries-old milling, and dairy traditions. It’s also a photographer’s dream when light slants low across the polder and windmill silhouettes carve the skyline. Meeting centrally and returning to the city makes the trip an efficient escape: you get the sense of wide-open countryside with the convenience of Amsterdam within reach. For anyone curious about Dutch land management or seeking a spirited, scenic pedal beyond the canals, this long route is an excellent way to feel the country’s shape under your wheels. Guides also share practical tips on local cycling etiquette, hand signals, and how to ride narrow dikes safely; groups are kept compact for safety, and the guide adjusts pace to prevailing wind conditions while offering short stops for photos, snacks, and questions and local tips.
