You push through a curtain of pine needles as the forest exhales — the trail narrows, wheels chatter over roots, and a shaft of sunlight catches the dust behind you. The Forest Glade Centre is your launch point, and from there the Tokai MTB Park opens into an array of singletrack and fireroads that can be stitched together for up to 30 km of riding.

The Tokai area sits on the steeper flank of the Cape Peninsula’s Table Mountain Group sandstone and older granite outcrops; pine plantations from the early 20th century sit beside pockets of endemic fynbos and Cape scrub where the soil is thin and acidic. The trails carry history too — old forest logging roads and estate tracks now repurposed for recreation, with nearby Constantia farms and Cape Dutch sites reminding riders they’re cycling through a landscape shaped by both geology and culture.
Expect a mix of fast descents, bermed turns, and short, punchy climbs — route options are chosen by your guide to match ability, so total elevation gain can range from modest rollers to sustained climbs if you opt for more. Trails are mostly packed dirt with rooty sections and occasional rocky steps; wet seasons make some lines slippery.
Practical notes: bring a full suspension bike if you have one, wear a helmet and gloves (both provided if needed), and carry at least 1–2 liters of water. Morning starts reduce wind and heat; alertness and basic bike-handling skills will make the three hours both safe and fun. Guides are experienced local riders who will set pace, point out local flora and fauna, and adapt routes to the group’s fitness.

Tokai’s forested slopes were extensively planted with pines during colonial forestry projects; many old logging roads are now recreational trails used by riders and walkers.
Tokai sits beside sensitive fynbos pockets — stick to trails to avoid trampling endemic plants and follow guide instructions to minimize erosion on steeper sections.
