You arrive through the garden gate as trade winds lift the scent of plumeria and kiawe smoke. The lawn opens onto a stage ringed by palms; beyond that, the valley drops toward a freshwater stream and the distant swell of Waimea Bay daring the shoreline. Actors move deliberately—lei in hand, umu (rock-oven) stones warming—the day unfolds as both ceremony and communal meal.
