Sunrise on the Greater Caucasus slices the valley light in thin, honest pieces as you climb from Grizdahna toward Griz — the trail a ribbon cut through scrub and shale. Wind finds the ridges first and pushes you forward; waterfalls call from gullies and the mountain air tastes of dry grass and tea smoked over village stoves.
challenging.
3 days.
Moderate to strong aerobic fitness with experience on steep, uneven mountain trails; comfortable carrying a 6–10 kg daypack.
Trails vary: Day 1 is steep with about 1,160 m elevation gain and is the most strenuous; subsequent days have mixed grades but can include narrow canyon crossings—moderate to strong fitness recommended.
Simple family homes with basic bedding; toilets are often squat outhouses and showers are external—hosts provide traditional meals and a warm welcome.
Not recommended for very young children due to long hiking days, steep sections and basic facilities; older teens with hiking experience may manage with guidance.
Expect limited or spotty cell signal in high valleys and between villages; plan accordingly and rely on guides for navigation and emergency plans.
The routes follow upland passages used for seasonal travel and trade among ethnic groups (Azeri, Lezgi, Khinalug) and pass areas with long-standing Mountain Jewish communities in Guba.
Trail use and homestays are low-impact but bring out waste; pack out plastics where possible and follow guides’ instructions to protect fragile alpine meadows.
