Þórsmörk’s name honours the Norse god Thor; the area has long been a refuge and summer pasture in Icelandic tradition, and its landscapes were reshaped by historic volcanic activity including the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption.
Þórsmörk is a protected nature reserve—stay on marked trails, avoid trampling fragile vegetation, and follow leave-no-trace principles to limit erosion and disturbance.
