The bus eases away from Lake Tekapo's glass-bright water and climbs out of the Mackenzie Basin, the Southern Alps receding like a mountain range turning its back. Windows frame fields of tussock and roadside rivers that dare you to follow their braided courses; guides punctuate the silence with geology and local stories, making the three-hour trip feel like a moving natural-history walk.
