You step onto the coach in Tbilisi as the city shrinks behind you and the Caucasus climbs forward—ridges folding into one another like pages of a hardback atlas. The road threads past the turquoise Zhinvali Reservoir, where water presses against the cliffs, then climbs through narrow gorges toward the Cross Pass. By mid-afternoon you trade paved ribbon for a short off-road ascent to the Gergeti Trinity Church at 2,170 meters, with Mount Kazbek (5,047 m) towering like a silent companion.

The drive is roughly 150 km and typically takes about 3 hours one-way depending on traffic and stops along the Georgian Military Highway.
You can take an off-road vehicle most of the way, but many travelers opt for a 20–40 minute uphill walk from the parking area to the church.
