You step out of private transport where ocher and gray slopes fold into one another, wind carving narrow gullies in the desert floor. The air smells faintly of dust and dry shrub; cacti stand like watchful hosts while distant vultures wheel overhead. The day begins in Neiva at 8:00 a.m., then pushes east across the Magdalena River — a wide, confident ribbon that dares you to look closer at its banks and birdlife — toward Villavieja and the Tatacoa.
