The motor hum fades and the coastline of Taormina unfurls: white houses peppered on steep terraces, the promontory of Capo Taormina slicing into the sea, and below, the tiny heart-shaped rock of Isola Bella gleaming like a jewel. Onboard a classic Sicilian caicco, skippers steer close to sea caves where sunlight funnels through submerged arches and paints the water electric blue.

The coast around Taormina grew from ancient Greek and Roman activity; Isola Bella was transformed in the 19th century into a private garden and later became part of a marine reserve.
The area lies inside a protected marine park—boaters are asked to avoid anchoring on seagrass and to use reef-friendly products to help preserve underwater habitats.
